Google map to “Algar do Carvão” and drive down Est. Algar do Carvao until you hit the parking lot. There is a small area for tickets, a gift shop, and restrooms. You will go through a small concrete tunnel to enter the volcano. There are three sections to Algar do Carvão: A chimney, cathedral, and lake. Concerts and events are often held in the cathedral area. There are a total of 338 steps down into the volcano and it is constantly dripping wet, so wear waterproof and nonslip boots.

Hours vary throughout the year. During peak season (late March through end of October), it is open daily from 2:00 PM to 6:00 PM. If visiting during off season (late October through mid-March), it is open only from 2:30 PM to 5:15 PM on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays.

It does cost more if booking an entire group in advance during the low season, but you can make an individual visit during peak season for 8€ (~$9 USD). Reservations are not required.

This volcano is one of many different types of caves you will see in the area if you’re on a tour of the island. Enjoy!
